Lisa Carlin -My Mother

My mother was a dedicated stay-at-home mom who could be considered a professional volunteer.  She created a loving home with consistent routines.  She was supportive of our lives.  She expected us to eat at the table as a family, she helped with our homework and read to us every night...well after we could read to ourselves.  I can hardly remember a sporting event I participated in that she did not attend.  My mother also expected us to be involved in our community.

As an adult I have been involved in many organizations as a volunteer.  I believe my dedication to this type of activity is directly related to my mother's example.  Her dedication to others is amazing.  I also believe she introduced me to the pleasure of reading that I continue to have today.

David Carlin - My Father

My father was a dedicated father who put his priority in providing for his family.  He worked long hours, but he was always home for dinner.  He has an unbelievable work ethic and is one of the most honest people I know.

As an adult I have been a dedicated professional.  I believe my work ethic and commitment to my profession are directly related to my father's example.

Sally and Phil Carlin - My Aunt and Uncle

My Aunt and Uncle were my were my parents best friends, business partner, and second set of parents to me.  They lived across the street from us so they were very much a part of my life.  My Aunt has a softer personality then my mother and set a different example.  She was playful and positive.  My Uncle is very committed to his family.  He showed his love through teasing and toughness.

Because we were so close to my extended family I have made it a priority to have my daughter know her extended family.  Although we live in another state we get have family reunions annually.

Courtney Rice - My Best Friend

Courtney lived across the street from me and taught me what it was like to truly have a dedicated, committed best friend.  We went to 2 different schools but could not wait to get home every afternoon to play out in our neighborhood with the rest of our posse Brooke, Sara and my cousin Andy.  We learned about life together.  We lifted each other up when we were down.  We celebrated each other's successes.

As an adult I know that I can still count on Courtney to this day.  We do not speak as often as we once did but I know she is there.  From the lessons I learned in this childhood friendship, I know how to build new friendships and what it takes to be a good friend.

Oscar Carlin - My Grandfather

Although my grandfather passed away when I was in third grade he had a wonderful impact on my life.  He was a great outdoors-man.  He would take my cousin Andy and me camping, hiking and fishing at least once a month.  These early experiences were the foundation to my love of the outdoors and adventure.

  1. I am glad that you were so close to your family growing up. My mom was also able to stay at home with us and only worked on Tuesday night. I am so thankful that she was able to do that and I'm sure you are too. My dad was also the worker bee of the family and taught me how to work for my money. Having been brought up this was has really driven my parenting and life values. I hope you feel the same way!
