Competent Communication: A Well Run Meeting
When I think about all the people I know who are competent communicators in at least one context, I immediately think about a colleague who runs an efficient meeting.
They start on time and end on time
They make everyone feel welcome
They have a clear written agenda that includes set goals and outcomes
They allow for short off topic diversions, but easily bring the meeting back on topic
They listen more then they talk
They ask probing questions
They pause for feedback
They encourage participation from everyone
They watch for physical cues to gain feedback on how the meeting is going and the needs of the group
They are professional, but they are not without humor
I believe when someone leads a well run meeting they are showing the upmost respect for the other participants in the meeting. They are appreciative of the time and effort each person is giving to the cause. And when everyone leaves they know something has been accomplished.
When I am the person running the meeting, I always attempt to reach the same level of efficiency mixed with a human touch as the person I am thinking about because I want the other participants to feel respected and their time valued.

Betsy,
ReplyDeleteI like how you shared about the effective communicator you know. Great effective leaders are great communicators. Another great point you made is the meeting leader listens more than he/her speak. Listening is one of the most important parts of communication. Thank You for sharing.
Yes Betsy, this was a great demonstration of competent communication. I definitely want to take this into consideration when I conduct my first meeting. Knowing that you accomplished your objective is important in meetings, in teaching, and in communication in general.
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy. I love your list! It's right on. These are all definitely the signs of a good communicator. I am on a parent education committee this year, and these are great pointers to show to my colleagues. Thanks! Great post!

Hey Betsy! I couldn't agree with you more-a well run meeting is very valuable! I think that great things could be being communicated, but if the recipients are not able to hear it because they worried that the meeting will run to long, or the discussion gets off topic, or one person hijacks the meeting and others aren't heard the good communication gets lost.
